Unidentified Network, Limited or No Connectivity (For Vista and XP)
Its been a while since i last post regarding troubleshooting steps. I’ve noticed that my post regarding the Unidentified network got quite a hit since i posted it. So i will elaborate more regarding these problem; Unidentified Network(in Vista) or Limited or No Connectivity(in XP).
Please bare in mind that my previous post is only for certain type of modems while in this post, i will explain what is the possible cause of the problem either in Win XP or Win Vista.
There are a few troubleshooting steps that you can try if you are encountering any of this problem. First of all, the reason for this issue is because your PC are unable to communicate with the modem, hence it cannot get any IP address from the modem at all. The problem could lies on these 3 things:-
- Faulty Network Cable
- Network Card(NIC) issue
- Modem Issue
So to check on this issue further you can try the steps below:-
1. First try to check you network cable, try to unplug and replug the cable from both end, the modem and the pc. Since the cause of this issue is because modem unable to communicate with PC there is a chance that your network cable/LAN cable or Ethernet cable is faulty. You can also try to disable and enable back your local area connection.
For XP-> go to your control panel -> click under network connection -> right click on Local Area Connection and disable it -> right click again to enable it back.
For Vista-> go to your network and sharing center-> click under manage network connection located on the left hand side -> right click on Local Area Connection and disable it -> right click again to enable it back
You can also test it with a different pc(if you got), if using the same cable on different pc still get the same error, it could be due to your cable it self.
2. (Please make sure you remember on your login password before proceed) You can try to do a hard reset on the modem/router itself. Normally, at the back of the modem you can find a tiny hole says Reset. You need to find a pin or paper clip and press and hold for around 10 to 15 secs. Once you had done the hard reset, try again to plug to the PC and check whether the issue resolve or not. If it is resolved, you need to configure your modem/router again.
3. If the first 2 troubleshooting steps doesn’t work, you can try to check on the Local area connection whether its been hardcoded or not. If it has been hardcoded with a different ip address(different than your modem/router ip add), you need to change it to obtain an ip address automatically. If it has not been hardcoded with any ip address, you can try to manually key in the ip address(make sure you already know the default gateway and the ip address of the modem/router before manually key in).
For XP -> go to control panel again -> click under network connection -> right click on Local Area Connection and click on properties -> highlight the internet protocol TCP/IP-> click the properties button -> You can see the IP address and DNS address here -> once done click on OK and it will close the page -> click OK again to close the LAN properties -> Disable and enable back your Local area connection.
For Vista -> Open the Network and Sharing Center -> click under manage network connection -> right click on Local area connection and click on properties -> highlight the internet protocol version 4 -> click on properties button -> you should see your ip address and dns address here -> once done click on OK and it will close the page -> click OK again to close the LAN properties -> Disable and enable back your Local area connection.
Normally this troubleshooting should be able to resolve your issue but if still the same problem:-
4. Try to check your NIC (Network Card) whether its working properly or not. You can try to reinstall the NIC driver.
For XP -> you need the driver cd
For Vista -> you can just uninstall it first and reboot your pc, Vista should be able to install the driver automatically.
5. If the NIC is working properly, please check on your modem/router.
As you can see, for this issue, it is best if you have a second computer to test since there are possibilities that problem can either come from PC or the modem itself. If you have a different PC, and it working properly on that PC, clearly we can say its a PC issue. One thing that i need to stress out here is, these problem is not cause from your ISP. Please remember that. Most of the technical issue regarding the internet connection came from the PC or modem itself.
Hope that my guide here can help people who use the google button often. Feel free to drop a comment if you have anything to ask. On my next post, i will be posting about the POP3 Email common issues.

Unidentified Network, Limited or No Connectivity–For Vista..
I’m facing this problem many times. It keeps prompting me the same problem whenever i change a network connection (eg: changing location from school to home).
How can i fix this?
you’re a stupid bitch, why don’t you read the fucking article.
I assume that u are using under a wireless connection. If u are using under wireless connection, the limited or no connectivity, or unidentified network means that u don’t have the correct WEP key. To resolve on this issue here, u need to check your home wireless connection, did u enable any Wireless Security Settings? If you do, please check on the WEP key that you set. WEP key can be in 10 digits or 26 digits, depending on the encryption strength u used, either 64 or 128 bits. Its a bit complicated to resolve this wireless issue as it can be from your modem or your wireless settings in your laptop. Do let me know the brand/model of your wireless modem or router. Then i can proceed to guide you on the issue there.
I have this issue on windows XP using the Izzi iburst pcmcia modem connected to a ricoh pci to pcmcia adapter. Internet connection works but the modem hangs every now and them. or No Connectivity appears of course.
firmware issues with modem… Make sure your modem has the latest available firmware on it… Update it if possible…
Hi,
I have connected my desktop (WinXP) and Laptop (Vista) through ethernet cable and after some efforts (LLTD,Same user on both machine and firewall exception etc.) I was able to access XP machine from Vista. But problem is that I am getting limited connectivity message everytime on XP machine while on Vista there is no issue. Even I can access XP from VISTA using RemoteDesktop. So what could be the problem??
Thanks,

Hi,
Im running a XP desktop pc, and a Vista laptop. I used to be able to connect them together with a lan cable – with no problems.
Now however, i keep seeing “Unidentified Network”, and “Limited Or No Connectivity”..
I reinstalled drivers, cable is fine, firewalls off..
Help please?
Cheers
Hi Gee,
If both pc are getting unidentified network and limited or no connectivity, you can try check on your modem/router. Try to do a hard reset and reconfigure it again. May i know what type of modem are you using?
i m using vista with adsl (shiro) modem whenever i connect a short length cable everythin is fine but whenever i want to connect a long like 35m cable it doesnt connect with showin unidentified network or limited or no connectivity, have used 3 different cables one of them was workin for sure!
i have been using xp on my desktop pc and vista on my laptop now i have a connection but the browser does not load and it says on the laptop limited or no connectivity. I am using a linksys router
my desktop pc is working fine.
Hi cindy, the laptop, is it on wireless or using LAN cable? If its on wireless, please check ur network key(security key for your wireless network). If it using cable, try with a different LAN cable first.
Hi everyone please I want some help here i’m also facing the same problem I have siemens 6500 wireless lan router and I’ve tried everything till now I couldn’t solve it limited and no connectivity so any one can help I was trying since 0ne week like I said I tried all fix problem can any one help thanks
Hi Mohamed,
please check your wireless network connection, was it a security enabled network? Usually, if the problem occurred on wireless connection, its due to the wrong key entered. double check your WEP settings again.
Just THIS week I’ve had this problem. Router is Netgear and my laptop is a Gateway using Vista Home Premium. it was working fine with the wireless router I’ve had, but it wasn’t until after a trip over the weekend that when I got back, it refused to connect properly. At times it will connect, but not to the point of using the internet with similar messages in the Network and Sharing Center saying Unidentified Network and the connection is always Limited….
I had our cable guy show up and he’s pretty sure its the computer since he checked out the router. He even tried to direct link it with a cable and still no changes. But whats odd is that I actually didn’t really do anything with my computer since I took it on that trip. I never connected to anything online since I left, so I’m puzzled to how this problem happened. And just to let you know, its not security key issues since mines are simple enough to remember.
My PS3 and Ipod connect to this fine……
I have this irritating problem of LONC whenever I put a 20m lan cable instead of the shorter 1m cable.
1.I am trying to connect a 2nd computer with an old wireless modem called Huawei.
2.LAN connects with 100mbps speed with the short cable, no problem
3.Problem began when I tried to connect the 2nd computer using a 20m cable – Limited or no connectivity
4.I removed all cables and tried using this lengthy cable on my original pc, still – LONC
5.I put my short cable and it works fine!
6.I took the long cable and checked whether its working on another modem in my friend’s house and it works pretty fine! His is a Linksys and a different ISP – So no problem with the cable.
Could this mean my modem is at fault? Or could this be an ISP problem? Please help!
I have a strange problem here… I have my HP notebook with dual boot Vista and Ubuntu. I connect to internet using my WIFI – WAN of my notebook PC. It was working very fine all day for quite long time.. But it started suddenly on one day …. showing unidentified network. I had defraged my registry the previous day.. but not sure if that would be the reason… I had uploaded previous backup of my registry but in vain. Googled and tried all solutions..nothing worked..except uninstalling the NIC (the connection is through BROADCOM wireless) I am now thinking of reinstalling the OS.
But my notebook PC is a dual boot one, which I have installed UBUNTU as well. UBUNTU connects perfectly to internet..
I have a desktop PC which is also connected wirelessly using a USB wireless network connection. This one works perfectly as well.
Thanks in advance for any valuable suggestions before I go about re-installing the OS
Harris…
in your case, i would say the router is at fault. Its an old router so i assumed not enough power to transmit thru long cable. Your friend is using linksys, not to be bias, but linksys do have one of the best router in the market…easy to config and troubleshoot. Please check your router again.
Regarding the Vista n Linux issue….
No need to reformat the vista yet. Try uninstall the driver in Vista, and restart it, it should automatically install the new driver. Please remember, the driver is the interface between your hardware and your OS. Different OS have different driver as it interpret differently. So try uninstalling the driver in Vista first.
Hope this help, sorry for the very late reply.
Please help. I have AT&T business DSL. The modem has a built-it router (wired and wireless). I output from the modem to a 24-port switch (running 14 desktops). Several of the desktops are Dells runnning Vista. After running this configuration for over a year, today, one of the Dells has limited connectivity and shows unidentified network. I rebooted the computer, modem and switch, with no success. Please advise.
Hi Jay,
Please check the network cable. Only one of the computer got this problem right. You might want to try to swap the network cable first. On the other note, you can try checking the LAN settings, see if there is any hardcoded ip address on your LAN.
Hello, I had a problem with my network cable when the dog decided to chew it, i repaired the cable by matching the colours, but after the repair my pc (vista) wont pick up the net it just says unidentified network, my laptop (7) does pick up the net over the wireless and the cable when plugged in, why has it just stopped working, it did have a problem before the chewing so why now, Please help

Have windows XP. Unistalled Norton and now get the unidentified network on my PC (HP). Belkin N300 Wireless router plugged into PC. Router plugged into Motorola modem. PC can’t access the internet. However my laptop and PS3 work fine. Unolugged and reset everything, still have the same issue. Network cable wasn’t switched out and router and modem located right next to PC. Everything worked fine 3 days ago before I removed Norton.
Hi Jerome,
How did u uninstall Norton?
AV usually have some association with your Internet connection, mainly Norton. Try reinstall Norton and check again.
